About Me
Corey McConnell
MSW, LISW-S
My Background and Credentials
As the owner and founder of A Renewed Outlook, I have worked in a variety of settings outside of my private practice, including community mental health services, a maximum security state prison, and a court-mandated drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. I began my career in a community mental health clinic, providing individual therapy to individuals who struggled with addiction and its numerous challenges. During this time, I received excellent training in the effective treatment of both alcohol and drug addiction, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additionally, I studied and learned about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as well as Motivational Interviewing (MI), which greatly enhanced my therapeutic skills. Following this position, I transitioned to providing therapeutic services to individuals within the penal system, initially working at a court-ordered rehabilitation facility and subsequently at a maximum security state prison.
I received my Master of Social Work degree from the University of Toledo, where I trained as a generalist and became well-versed in cognitive-behavioral therapy. Furthermore, I received specialized training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) through Behavioral Tech as well as additional training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) through the Beck Institute. I am currently a Licensed Independent Social Worker, with a supervisory endorsement, in the state of Ohio.
My Approach
A Therapy Space Built on Safety, Respect, and Real Connection
I work with adults who are carrying the long-term impact of complex trauma—often the kind that doesn’t leave visible scars. My approach is rooted in the belief that healing happens not through quick fixes, but through consistent, compassionate presence in a space where you don’t have to explain, perform, or hold it all together.
I bring a relational, trauma-informed lens to therapy. That means I don’t just treat symptoms—I help you understand how your past experiences shaped the way you relate to yourself and others today. We’ll slow things down, build trust at your pace, and explore the patterns that once protected you, but may no longer serve you.
You won’t be pushed to dive in before you're ready. Together, we’ll build a foundation of safety—internally and externally—so you can begin to reconnect with your emotions, your needs, and your sense of self.
Whether we’re unpacking shame, navigating emotional numbness, or exploring how early relationships shaped your sense of worth, my role is to walk alongside you—not to direct or diagnose, but to witness and support your healing with curiosity, care, and respect.
My outcomes
I've had the opportunity to work with many individuals from a diverse range of walks and stages of life. Throughout this journey, I have been fortunate enough to successfully assist clients in stopping or significantly decreasing suicide attempts, self-harm behaviors, hospitalizations, and the use of both alcohol and drugs. Additionally, I have supported many in overcoming challenges related to depression, anxiety, avoidance, PTSD symptoms, and self-hate. Through our collaborative efforts, I have helped clients discover new strategies for managing emotions and navigating life’s complexities, improving their relationships, and, ultimately, increasing their comfort in their own skin.
I understand where you are coming from. What you are feeling is completely valid and makes sense. I sincerely want to help you find a path forward. Are you ready to take the first steps in building a life that is worth living? Allow me to show you how we can embark on this journey together.
